Peruvian President
Humala wined and dined with mining companies and free trade
lobbyists! President Ollanta Humala received the Gold Insigne Award
from the Council of the Americas (a corporate free trade advocacy
alliance) at a $500 a plate dinner sponsored by notorious human
rights & environment abusing mining companies Barrick Gold,
Freeport McMoran, and Pluspetrol.
Fortunately,
activists were on hand calling for environmental and climate Justice,
Not corporate greed, and to demand that Humala defend workers,
farmers, and indigenous peoples, not the Profits of Multinationals!
The activists
demands included:
* No More Free Trade
Agreements! No Trans-Pacific
Partnership! No Trade
In Services Agreement! * Respect Indigenous Land Rights! No
more displacement!
* Stop the Murder
of Indigenous Environmental Defenders! * Break the US-Peru
Free Trade Agreement & Demand Doe
Run Clean Up La Oroya NOW! * No to Pluspetrol's Camisea
Gas Pipeline Expansion!
* Justice for
Cajamarca: No
to the Conga Mining Project!
For
hours, activists chanted and yelled up to the second story windows of
this disgraceful affair. People leaving the building reported that
diner participants could hear us throughout the event as we yelled
“Ni TISA, ni TPP—no queremos TLCs!” and “Humala, escucha, el
puebo esta en la lucha!”, and “Agua si, oro no!”

WHAT
YOU CAN DO
The
passage of TPP threatens
to bring even more devastating extraction projects to Peru—and to
give foreign corporations the power to sue Peru's government for
enforcing its environmental laws. With Peruvian indigenous people,
workers, and rural communities still reeling from the effects of the
Peru FTA, the last thing Peru needs is a new, massive free trade
agreement. The most important thing we can do in the US to stop TPP
is to stop Congress from granting President Obama authority to Fast
Track TPP through Congress. You can help by calling, writing, and
emailing your US Senators and US Representatives and urging them to
OPPOSE Fast Track trade legislation under ANY name–whether called
the Bipartisan Trade Priorities Act of 2014,” “Fast Track,” or
anything else! Tell they you want a commitment in writing before the
2014 election, that you will remember their answer on Election Day,
and that you will interpret a non-answer as a indication that they
SUPPORT Fast Track! You can find their names and contact information
here.
